Calibre in the Cloud (VPS)

Hi All,

Summary

Run calibre on a VPS.

Long Tale

First off - absolutely love Calibre. My kindle gets filled with daily news feeds which is good for long tube rides to work.

However - I was wondering what about using calibre when my main computer is off ? Especially when getting my daily news feeds - my kindle needs to have instance of calibre running somewhere to get the news feeds.
[Ok I have a big server upstairs, running myth, plone, and other stuff - but that is not the point. More that it was a problem to solve]

What about putting calibre on a Virtual Private Server ?

So I need way to control calibre...
How about VNC...
* Using fake X (xvfb), matchbox window manager and X11vnc.

So I need way to upload content - but with at least password control...
How about quick Django app...

So what about places blocking all ports accept 80 and 443...
How about using apache to reverse proxy.

So need a simple way other can put all these bit together...
How about a simple install script.

Hence over the last few days I have thrown some code together. If you have a VPS, with 384 or more RAM. (Using swap to compensate really slows it down - I tried it and would not recommend). Using the equally wonderful lowendbox, deals will mean a VPS around $3-$6 per month. Which maybe is less then electricity costs and you are not trying to serve content from you own internet connection at home.

I have put the code at http://code.google.com/p/calibre-cloud/

I also have two videos;
1 - Installation from scratch on a VPS. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9t1hpQbsuM

2 - Using calibre on a VPS. Calibre in the clouds! -

Feedback welcome and thanks for calibre.

Enjoy,

p.s. Any one got a good instructables recipe ?
