incredible the ammount of people who used to hate LCD's "flashlight onto your eyes" and are now raving over "glow".
BTW, in the end Amazon's conference was also Amazon's competitors conference. |

Kobo's thriving in Canada and France despite Amazon beung present. Heck, Kobo now has about 50% of the market in Canada, despite that being the second market (IIRC) that the Kindle launched in globally (and the Kindle having had a head start there).
Based on that I conclude Kobo is thriving where there's a strong retail presence they can partner with (Chapters/Indigo in Canada, FNAC in France, WHSmith in the UK, etc.). There's no such strong unaligned retail presence in the U.S., though their proposal for independents has promise since (unlike Google) Kobo intends to encourage them to sell devices too. I'm excited about the Kobo Glo. Might use it to replace my Kobo Vox, though I'll have to use the Kobo app on another device to read graphic novels if I do. |

The lack of a dedicated GPU listed in the Arc specs is a sign that it will underperform for its listed specs just as badly as the similarily GPUless Vox. [dedicated GPU makes a HUGE performance difference, even outside of games]

The software is also the hold back for me. If they'd ever get it right, the Glo and the Mini would be my next purchases. I like my Kobo Touch, but the each software update fixes something and breaks something else.
Thanks owly for the youtube video! I'd love to be able to see one in person someday. The video didn't make the e-ink screens look very white. |

While it's true you can buy a Kindle from Canada you have to get it from the US store, Amazon still doesn't have an actual Canadian Kindle store which is what I think the Monkey meant.

Kobo doesn't seem to believe in page turn buttons, having used a d-pad for their first two ereaders and, of course, touchscreen for their third (a huge mistake - the infrared system used isn't nearly sensitive enough and so page turning is quite dodgy).

B&N is going into the UK next month facing THIS. Their timing could have been better.

Yeah, they might have had some chance to penetrate the market if they'd got in last spring when they released their glow reader and offered it cheaper. Now they'll be competing on price and specs with both Kobo and Kindle. Dead in the water.

Sony's T2 is aso priced at $129 and it has neither front light (the only "name" vendor without it) nor the XGA screen. But at least it has "SONY" stenciled on it. That is enough for some people. |
