It's going to be expensive for Microsoft to miss the slate train. If I'm not mistaken Bill Gates is still one of the wealthiest Americans, but that can quickly change with big companies taking a wrong direction.

they have acknowledged that. it is kind of surprising that they can be kind of luddites about some forward movement in devices

So Microsoft doesn't make hardware, they provide the OS. They already have Windows for Tablets (for several years), and there are several manufactures making tablets for that platform (Panasonic, HP, Lenovo to name a few). And they already have an OS for phones - Windows Mobile, with several phones running that OS. I'm not sure what the news is here, other than they will have a new version soon, that will no doubt be just as buggy and "Windowsish" as the previous version, but will probably look more like Windows 7. Did I miss something?

If MS slate OS is not compatible with productivity Microsoft software, it is going to be a major fail (IMHO).
Otherwise what's the competitive advantage that such device have over iPad and Android devices? |

The Ipad and it's OS is not compatible with Mac productivity software, but that hasn't stopped it's popularity.

I agree with m-reader on this one. iPad is about coolness, which has nothing to do with productivity. There is nothing cool at all about Microsoft, so it has to be practical. People only by Microsoft products because of the applications barrier to entry - they buy it because the must in order to be productive. If it doesn't run the productivity software, then there is no reason left to choose Microsoft.

I can't imagine that they would make it non-compatible, but it is useless to speculate until there is firm information

The year of 2010 has been the year of press releases, vapour and very little hard fact. Lets just hope 2011 turns out better.

Read it a couple of times and began to think about it, and that statement is surprisingly true. There haven't really been any magnum leap technology wise this year, or have I missed something?

The only thing that looked exciting was the MS Courier, and it got dropped. Unless of course MS is looking at resurrecting it.
I still want one! |
