Van Dine, S.S.: Vance 12 - The Winter Murder Case. v1. 26 May 07
The 12th and final book in the "Philo Vance" series, published after the author's death.
Stolen emeralds and murder form the background to this final Philo Vance investigation. The book also includes an essay by the author, "Twenty Rules for Writing Detective Stories". Well, that's it. The complete series. Enjoy! |

I get the impression that he was rather running out of ideas by the end. The last books in the series are less than half the length of the early ones, and they lack all the fun plans and diagrams that the early ones had, too. Perhaps it was just as well that they stopped when they did.

He was a long way from Haggard. His writings seem to toil over the language rather than flow. A good read none-the-less. I knew this series mostly as a radio drama from the 40s/50s from old transcriptions in OTR (Old Time Radio.)

If the books get shorter as he runs out of ideas, he is to be highly commended!!!! I think that most authors will grind out pages regardless of content! ;-)
