How sweet of you LCF. Usually I try and ditch the 'lady' part that grandma tried to get into me (too much hard work) but I'll take the flowers as they cheer me up (just what I needed on a very blue day).

I'm sorry, I do not find this sweet at all. I find it rather insulting actually, considering what women's day is about.

According to Wikipedia, it means different things in different cultures: "Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and St Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner." Mind you, it's hard to do anything without offending someone somewhere - I was saddened by the use of a horse-slave in the Peter Gabriel video, but I appreciate that's a minority view in these fora and that's ok. |

I do come from Eastern Europe and have grown up with the custom and everybody being happy about it. FlorenceArt, I'm really sorry, if you felt insulted in some way. Last edited by LCF; 03-09-2010 at 03:51 PM. |

What? Another stupid hallmark holiday?
How about a "Men suck" holiday, "My boss is an ass" holiday, "Quit eating all the bon-bons and ho hos" holiday or "I know you are screwing your secretary" holiday. You NEVER see cards for those days at Hallmark |

Why do I sense Iʻve just started this thread on a downward spiral? (and we just "celebrated" "girlsʻ day" on 3/3-- Japanese inspired holiday, I believe? I always forget about it, as I did not grow up with it. Boysʻ day is 5/5 I think?) |
