Asus DR-570: E-Book-Reader mit OLED-Display und 122 Stunden Dauerbetrieb

Bei Chip.de gibt es einen kleinen Bericht. Beeindruckt hat mich jedenfalls die angegebene Betriebszeit von 5 Tagen. Im englischsprachigen Bereich gibt es schon ein paar Diskussionen zu ihm.

Na, das ist aber hier außer Konkurenz. Mit OLED-Display dürfte zwar ein Lesen im Dunkeln hervorragend möglich sein. Dafür ist dann aber bei Tageslicht das Vergnügen sehr eingeschränkt. Es handelt sich hierbei eben nicht um ein reflektives Display.

Falsch, man kann viel besser "Lesen" durch Text-to-Speech" und er ist dadurch jedem Reader überlegen, weil er immer Vorlesen kann mit oder ohne Sonne ; - )
Ich wüßte schon ein paar Sehbehinderte, welche sich freuen werden, wenn sie die Möglichkeit haben nicht nur Texte zu vergrößern, sondern sich auch diese Vorlesen zu lassen, wenn die Augen zu arg angestrengt sind. Im Ebook Bereich gibt es einige Behinderte, welche nur Ebooks lesen weil sie es müssen und nicht, weil sie es wollen.
Aber klar, hier geht es um keinen Spezialisten, sondern ein 200 Gramm leichtes Teil für Videos und Bücher mit Kompromissen.

"Das Gerät wird angeblich nicht nur dank einer Text-to-Speech-Engine E-Books vorlesen, sondern auch Videos aus dem Internet streamen können. Damit wäre der Asus DR-570 tatsächlich weit mehr als nur ein weiterer Reader"

Ähemm. Ich will lesen. Sonst könnt ich mir auch Hörbücher gönnen.

Diese "wohltätig" angekündigten Eigenschaften von "Text-to-speech" für Sehbehinderte halte ich bei so einem Gerät für sprichwörtliche "Augenwischerei".


Mein Vater ist hochgradig sehbehindert. Der Umgang mit solchen Geräten ist für diese Benutzergruppe nicht optimiert. Da müssen noch ganz anders designte und einfacher zu bedienende Geräte kommen. Was soll ein Sehbehinderter mit solchen Displays?

Ich muss sagen, OLED ist schon eine Klasse für sich. Seh ich bei meinem Telefon.
Da aktive Illumination, ist auch die Verwendung bei Sonnenlicht besser als bei LCD, und die Darstellung (Farben, Sättigung, Kontrast) ist der Hammer.

Ausserdem hat mich die Akkulaufzeit von meinem Phon durchaus positiv überrascht (Trotz WLAN, 3G und 800MHz CPU). Kein Vergleich zu eInk, keine Frage, aber Welten besser als LCD.

Ich habe bereits früh Erfahrungen mit OLED-Displays gemacht. Tatsächlich soll die Haltbarkeit signifikant verbessert worden sein. Die ersten Displays hatten da mächtig Probleme, sogar bei Nichtgebrauch durch Oxidation. Je heller jedoch die Pixel leuchten, desto kürzer ist die Lebensdauer.
Ich glaube deshalb nicht, daß man ein OLED-Display in der Sonne lange betreiben sollte.
Bei Handys sehe ich keine Gefahr, da man spätestens nach 2 Jahren
ein neues im Gebrauch hat und das Display nicht ständig der Sonne aussetzt.
Ein eBook-Gerät, auf dem viele Bücher mit DRM gespeichert sind, sollte die Lebensdauer jedoch wesentlich länger sein.

Ist Text-to-Speech heutzutage überhaupt schon annehmbar ausgereift?
Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen das die irgendwelche gängigen Bücher vernünftig vorlesen können. Wie solln sich das beim Herrn der Ringe anhören? Harry Potter? Jedes Fantasybuch das ein paar eigene Vokabeln hat?

Ich hab grad nur den Windows Vorleser im Hinterkopf und das ist ja nun wirklich nur ein Tool um laut zu lachen...

Also meine deutschen PDF kann ich am PC mit englischer Stimme vorlesen lassen und das ist entweder katastrophal oder witzig, je nach eigener Stimmung.
Ein Sehbehinderter hat mir mal einen Buchtext mit Logos 4 vorlesen lassen und die weibliche Stimme dort war akzeptabel. Klar, Rufus Beck und Harry Rowohlt klingen besser, aber nicht jedes Buch und jede Zeitschrift gibt es als Hörbuch.

Es gibt TTS Engines, die für "normale" Texte recht brauchbare Ergebnisse liefern. Bei Fantasy und Science Fiction mit ihrem z.T. erfundenen Vokabular wird's natürlich schwer, ebenso bei nicht geläufigen Namen oder wenn fremdsprachige Wörter im Text eingestreut sind.
