Arrow "No hack" comic book viewer on ALL eink kindles!

The whole point of this thread is that the K5(touch) cannot display comic books the "old fashioned" way that works on all the other kindles, and this thread started as K5 only. But because there are other kindle users who may not be aware that their kindles CAN do .cbz comic book files, the thread title was changed to include all the kindles. Only the next paragraph gives details for them, which is pretty obvious to most users. The bulk of this post is for the K5(touch). For some reason this thread title really bothers some people so badly they feel obligated to make personal attacks. I do not understand these people. This thread is not for them. It is for those who DO want this information.

UPDATE: If you haven't already noticed this, this is even easier on a K4(mini) and earlier kindle models (including DX/DXG/K3) -- just copy your comic book .cbz file directly into the documents folder on your kindle USB drive. No need to rename it.

The following instructions are for the K5(touch):

1) Create a folder called images on your USB drive.

2) Copy your comic book .cbz file into the new images folder.

3) Rename your comic book file extension from .cbz to .zip.

4) Click your kindle Home button. You should see "Images" with a comment showing how many total pages (and other images and photos) are in your new Images folder.

5) Click the Images folder. You should see all your photos and comic books (and other photo collections stored in .zip files). Your comic book will have a comment showing how many pages it has.

6) Click your comic book. It can take the kindle 20 seconds (or more) to load a large comic book.

7) Navigate like a book: tap screen top for menu (left arrow to go back to collections), tap left edge for previous page, tap center for next page.

8) Enjoy reading comic books on your kindle 5 (touch), using only the built-in software provided by amazon.

Thanks amazon!

EDIT: On the K4 and earlier, the image viewer has extra menu options, including the ability to disable dithering (16-color truncation), fullscreen viewing, refresh mode selection, and other interesting options.

Wow this should impresss some people, what with the no hack and all. This should be up on my blog soon. Now what need is a free download hack. Then we could write a script to rename all cbz files to zip.

On the K4, you can just copy your comic book .cbz files directly into your documents folder on the USB drive. You do not need an images folder, and you do not need to rename them into .zip files.

The cheaper K4 models are a little more "comic book friendly" than the K5(touch), but by using the instructions provided in the first post above, not that bad.

This thread now covers all eink kindles, so it has a new less-restrictive thread title. As it turns out, I tested the instructions for the K4, and they work on the DX, DXG, and K3 as well. Cool!

Okay, I realize that this "images folder" business is old news for some, but "how to use it for comic books" was researched and documented by geekmaster and published in this thread where it can be discovered easily and used by many comic book fans. It also works for photo collections stored inside .zip files. Enjoy!

Well in Windows you could just open a command prompt in the comic directory and type ren *.cbz *.zip

Or open Notepad and type the following.

@echo off
ren *.cbz *.zip

Then open the file dialogue to save as all files and save it as something like ComicZipper.bat

Drop the batch file in the same directory as the comics and boom - doubleclick to convert.

Later, when somebody rediscovers this hidden knowledge and creates a hugely successful product based on their rediscovery, you can sell this to a patent troll for HUGE money!

And thank you MUCH for momentarily diverting my mind from recent pain and anguish experienced in recent posts.

No No No No NO! I meant GUI LAUNCHER script, although yes, it would use something similar. I was also looking at this K2 hack called savory. This ran a little daemon that looked for new epub and pdf files in /mnt/us and then ran "ebook-convert" from calibre to convert it to a mobi. If we could adopt this to our needs....

Interesting.

For comics I'd just been MOBI-izing them from Calibre and uploading that way.

I do not have <5.1.0. "All kindles" is interpreted by me as "all kindles running the most recent firmware available for them, which is what I can test on". If I had the time (or at this point the desire), I could flash 5.0.0 and try it. If 5.0.0 does not work like 5.1.0, did you try the putting a zip or cbz file in documents like for the k4 and earlier?

Or are you talking about file renaming? It helps if you include a quote (or relevant parts of a quote) to establish context.

I guess the speed is a problem with cbz itself. Even ubuntu's document viewer takes some time to open it.
