Interesting bug?

Well, I dont really know if it s a big or not but I find it interesting.
I have books in my library that have nothing in them... as in no formats.
I was downloading books from Amazon as I buy them to have a local copy and I had Amazon replace my Kindle. I selected all the books in Calibre, edited Meta Data in bulk, and had it delete all AZW formats.
They are were deleted like I wanted but interesting enough, the book entry was still in Calibre as were the covers and descriptions.

That is exactly how it is meant to work.

So it is supposed to have an entry for a book that is not in the library?

I use that facility all the time to keep track of books I only have in Paper format, or that are on my wish list.

At the moment I have to create those entries by adding a dummy file, and then deleting the file to leave the entry. I would like it if Kovid gave a way to do it directly.

Yes, because Calibre still has to store your metadata-specific settings (cover, authors, etc.). If you want to delete the book entirely from the database, delete it from inside Calibre.
