Don't know about calibre, but came across this the other day. Played with it once and it seemed OK.

Not really. The current pdf engine doesn't support multi-column. A new pdf engine is in the works that will support multi-column. You can access it today via the command line by using the ebook-convert command with the argument --new-pdf-engine. It won't fully convert the book, but it will turn a multi-column pdf into a single column html file if you also specify a debug output location using the -v argument.

That said the html file it produces today is pretty rough and will definitely need further editing - it may not be worth it to you.

Well, I tried many diffident approaches but it was a no go. It degraded the font quality and did not effectively handle the embedded 2-columns per page format.

I'm using "Stanza Desktop" to convert Perry Rhodan 2-column PDFs to ePub. Works well for most of the old ones. Buying the new series as epub.

k2pdfopt

You might also try k2pdfopt for converting multiple column PDFs for better readability on small e-book readers.

The current version of k2pdfopt only outputs rasterized pdf, which most ebooks can read directly.
