No price or much else except OCR and flash, but talk about cool-looking!!

Ok.

When it will be available and what's the price ?

It seems to be a very good tool

Looks good, but I would be very surprised if it ever got to market. Its only purpose is to violate someone's copyright, so it would be very easy for any publisher to get an injunction against it.

There is another purpose. I dare say a more important one.

Benefit us, regular readers.
Hopefully they can show a middle finger to all fat asses in the offices with yachts and jeeps and push the scanner to the market.

Doesn't look terribly useful without a batch feeder / automatic page turning. Just my € 0.02.

Not true, you can argue it is for preserving old books that are out-of-copyright and falling apart as well as your own documentary material, diaries etc... also there are already several much higher end book scanners of near identical design (on sale now) but using a couple of DSLR scanners rather than a single block with 2 cameras in it. These have been available for several years plus a do-it-yourself version.

Nobody blocked reel-to-reel tape recorders, cassette recorders, video recorders, DVD recorders etc although you could try the same argument as to their primary purpose in consumer hands... if the interest is OK and the price is right then they should do OK with this device though it'll still be a little cumbersome to use as no page turner but that's why it'll be relatively cheap...

The absence of these features will be what makes the device affordable... the cheapest equivalent I saw last year including page turner, was a higher end 4 figure price tag with 2 DSLR cameras (not expensive ones either)...

They tried to block video recorders (and also mp3 players, though you don't mention those). But the difference with all of those is that they would have a legitimate legal use, and were marketed for that use. I doubt there will be enough people interested in digitising their old diaries to make it worth marketing to them. And if they market it as a tool to aid copyright violation they will just be asking for trouble.

In the US, it is generally thought to be a "fair use" to scan physical books you own for the purposes of archiving, or reading as scans on your own computers, or even OCRing to an ebook for use on your own reading devices. This is essentially identical to ripping a CD, see Ripping - Legality.

This is not a new concept... it is merely a less expensive version, bookc scanners like this have been available for years and still are, the only difference with this relates to its price... they haven't been the subject of legal action so far and precedent tends to affect legal positions considerably. If anyone tries some restraint action then the defence is easy... these devices have been around for years and you ignored them, nothing's changed.

I was seriously looking at such a scanning device in 2009 but couldn't justify the cost at that time... and simply because you don't think there's a legal use, doesn't make it so... I've got plenty of material it would be useful for... absolutely legally and I'm not the only one...

Don't you have that stuff at the beginning of a book about not being able to copy it or store it in a retrieval system?

The Plustek Opticbook 3600 didn't attract any injunctions as far as I know. Why should this be any different?
