DR800 how to zoom on DR800? (n00b question)

ok, I've been trying for two days to come to grips with the zooming function on my DR800S (2.0 beta firmware installed), but I still don't get the pan function... what does it do and how does it work?

and how exactly are you supposed to work with the selection zoom? I was looking at the icon and thought I should draw a diagonal line with the stylus over the area that should be zoomed in - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Am I doing something wrong?

(I'm a compelete n00b, obviously

Draw a circle around the area you want to zoom into.

Or diagonally corner-to-corner. What it's basically doing is recording the min/max coordinates of the screen touched (top, bottom, left, and right) between starting to draw and lifting up the stylus.
