Controlling chapter heading sizes?

I've noticed that sometimes, after converting to epub, an ebook will wind up with chapter headings that are both incredibly large and not in a pleasing visual format. Usually they wind up about two or three times the original size, and they're in boldface, underlined, white-on-black text. With one, there are inexplicable page breaks between the chapter number and chapter title.

Is there any way to prevent this?

Again it depends on the HTML in your input file.

OK... but why is it only epub that suffers this way? If I convert to LRF, everything looks fine, and it looks fine in a mobi original.

By the way, your response time is awe-inspiring. Thank you very much for assisting with this and all other Calibre questions!

Mainly because the font size normalization routines are different for each of the three formats. This will also change in the 0.6 release, so you get consistent results across all formats.
