The Killing Frost and New Dawn Rising, the first and second titles in the Avengers series by Scott Gamboe, are free in the Kindle store. These are both self-published, but I ran across them because the author lied on the KDP form for New Dawn Rising, claiming it was published by Medallion Press; he's no longer on their author list, but the book was apparently published by Medallion in 2009 (but is now out of print); The Killing Frost is still available as a mass-market paperback from Amazon, under the Medallion label, but I suspect it's back-stock that won't be replaced.
The Killing Frost
There is an uneasy peace between the United Systems Coalition and the Bromidian Empire. But it is constantly strained by the actions of a group of renegade Bromidians who call themselves Rising Sun, and an elite Coalition military group known as the Avengers has been fighting a covert war against them for years. Captain Arano Lakeland leads one of the teams. His motivation, vengeance. Revenge against Rising Sun's invasion of his homeworld and the subsequent slaughter of his family. His actions, however, in his relentless quest to see the Bromidian empire brought to its knees, have won him the enmity of Grand High Councilor Balor Tient, a corrupt man holding one of the most powerful positions in the Coalition. To further complicate matters, Arano's efforts to prove a connection between Rising Sun and the Bromidian government are being hampered by both a traitor in the Coalition bureaucracy, and the Coalition's desire for peace at any price. And now it is a race against time as Arano and his companions try to survive long enough to solve a series of brutal murders, expose the traitor in their midst, and unite various factions with the Coalition. And if he fails? Cataclysmic war that will engulf the entire galaxy. New Dawn Rising A year has passed since the end of the conflict between the United Systems Coalition and the Bromidian Empire. From the ashes of war a democratic government has arisen, with the Coalition and Bromidians working to form a fragile peace. But behind the scenes, a conspiracy is growing, threatening to destroy the stability Captain Arano Lakeland and his elite unit have fought to protect. When a coup d'état overthrows the provisional Bromidian government, Arano finds himself trapped behind enemy lines and has to lead an unlikely band of companions against a shadowy foe. Fighting for their very survival, the group waits for word about who is behind the insurrection and prepares to hunt down the intergalactic terrorist responsible for a series of deadly bombings. Before it is over, the unit's search will expose a vast and terrible conspiracy that could destroy the Coalition. |

Another one for the adventurous. Debut self pubbed title (part one of four). Interestingly, one of the writers says in the intro that he doesn't claim to be a writer. Sample seems ok but the description reads like a video game.

I downloaded Among the Fallen, yeah I thought it read like a videogame to. It was ok. Bit disturbing to be honest, some great set pieces, bit too sadistic and gloomy for me though. good title
