Self published mystery/suspense from a MFA graduate in central Maine. Many 5-star reviews but sample seems competent.

All the Blue-Eyed Angels by Jen Blood
http://www.amazon.com/All-the-Blue-E...9010358&sr=1-1

Quote:
Investigative journalist Erin Solomon sets out to solve a mystery that has haunted her since childhood: a fatal fire at the Payson Church of Tomorrow, the isolated fundamentalist community where Erin lived with her father for the first ten years of her life. When what was presumed to be cult suicide turns out to be anything but, Erin returns to her hometown to find the truth behind the tragedy. Now, isolated on the Maine coast with an old flame and a handsome newcomer with his own dark past, Erin will risk everything to uncover the secrets of Payson Isle - secrets someone will kill to keep buried.

The Killing Frost and New Dawn Rising, the first and second titles in the Avengers series by Scott Gamboe, are free in the Kindle store. These are both self-published, but I ran across them because the author lied on the KDP form for New Dawn Rising, claiming it was published by Medallion Press; he's no longer on their author list, but the book was apparently published by Medallion in 2009 (but is now out of print); The Killing Frost is still available as a mass-market paperback from Amazon, under the Medallion label, but I suspect it's back-stock that won't be replaced.

The Killing Frost
There is an uneasy peace between the United Systems Coalition and the Bromidian Empire. But it is constantly strained by the actions of a group of renegade Bromidians who call themselves Rising Sun, and an elite Coalition military group known as the Avengers has been fighting a covert war against them for years.

Captain Arano Lakeland leads one of the teams. His motivation, vengeance. Revenge against Rising Sun's invasion of his homeworld and the subsequent slaughter of his family. His actions, however, in his relentless quest to see the Bromidian empire brought to its knees, have won him the enmity of Grand High Councilor Balor Tient, a corrupt man holding one of the most powerful positions in the Coalition.

To further complicate matters, Arano's efforts to prove a connection between Rising Sun and the Bromidian government are being hampered by both a traitor in the Coalition bureaucracy, and the Coalition's desire for peace at any price. And now it is a race against time as Arano and his companions try to survive long enough to solve a series of brutal murders, expose the traitor in their midst, and unite various factions with the Coalition. And if he fails?

Cataclysmic war that will engulf the entire galaxy.

New Dawn Rising
A year has passed since the end of the conflict between the United Systems Coalition and the Bromidian Empire. From the ashes of war a democratic government has arisen, with the Coalition and Bromidians working to form a fragile peace. But behind the scenes, a conspiracy is growing, threatening to destroy the stability Captain Arano Lakeland and his elite unit have fought to protect. When a coup d'état overthrows the provisional Bromidian government, Arano finds himself trapped behind enemy lines and has to lead an unlikely band of companions against a shadowy foe. Fighting for their very survival, the group waits for word about who is behind the insurrection and prepares to hunt down the intergalactic terrorist responsible for a series of deadly bombings. Before it is over, the unit's search will expose a vast and terrible conspiracy that could destroy the Coalition.

FALLING UNDER by Danielle Younge-Ullman. Originally published by Plume in 2008 this literary/romance/relationship/self-discovery title is free today.
http://www.amazon.com/FALLING-UNDER-...9011299&sr=1-1

Quote:
Mara Foster is a mess. A rollercoaster of a childhood made a survivor of her, but as an adult she is a mass of contradictions and unrealized potential. Talented, fierce and smart, but burdened by a host of anxieties, Mara finds it difficult to leave the house most days, much less imagine anything resembling normalcy.

Then Mara meets Hugo, and the walls she has built around herself begin to crumble. As she fights for a breakthrough both in her art and in life, she must come to terms with her complicated past, in order to gain a second chance at happiness.

Written in spare, crisp prose and marked by wry humor, FALLING UNDER is a gripping contemporary tale of human frailty, friendship, and hard-earned redemption.

Ratings Game by Ryan C. Thomas. A serial killer comedy published by Grand Mal Press (still closed to new submissions).
http://www.amazon.com/Ratings-Game-S...9021687&sr=1-1

Quote:
Roland Stone and Doug Hardwood are New York City's top news anchors. Trusted, respected, revered among the media's who's who. In their profession, it's all about getting the exclusive. Whoever breaks the big story first gets the viewers, and whoever gets the viewers gets the advertisers. It's all money in the end. With their stations neck to neck in the ratings, and the threat of hipper, younger anchors waiting to take their places, each knows they must come up with a juicy story to save their job. Suddenly, a horrific murder rocks the airwaves, and Roland Stone has the inside story. But great minds think alike, and it's just mere hours before Doug Hardwood is reporting on the work of a different serial killer. Over night, New York City becomes a haven for two of the most inventive serial killers ever to walk the streets, each bent on getting more press than the other. Two desperate news anchors. One city. A whole lot of bloodshed. Story at eleven.

A wild card. Self pubbed fantasy.

Arachne: Death the Beginning by Kent D Kelly

Quote:
An epic dark fantasy from the author of the award-winning COMPLETE ALICE IN WONDERLAND, ARACHNE Book I – DEATH, THE BEGINNING chronicles the death and afterlife of Elspeth Wight, a young Steam Age noblewoman whose beloved sister Christabel has died. Without Christabel, the heartbroken Elspeth forsakes her own beliefs. Haunted and reckless, she dares to believe in the whispers of an elder—and her childhood protector—Symon Adler. Symon swears to Elspeth that there is a secret afterlife, and it is there that Christabel’s soul breathes on. He promises the sisters could be reunited in a dark and Gothic paradise, the eternal purgatorial netherworld known only as Embris.

To descend and embrace her sister’s soul, Elspeth must forsake the world of the living. She must poison herself, and die. In rebirth, she lives a never-ending nightmare, a doll-twisted masquerade that spirals down into a truer reality than our own. Falling into Embris, Elspeth discovers the deepest secret of human madness: death is only our flowering, an invitation to a bittersweet eternity, one more wondrous than any mortal faith could ever seek. Embris is revealed as a shadowy Eden, where tortured spirits of the dead are enslaved as puppets and crusaders, lost in an eternal war between primeval horrors and darkest angels. To free the soul of Christabel, Arachne must force her way through poisonous forests, covens of ghost-hounds, the souls of murdered children and a cathedral carved all of ice.

But Elspeth is stolen away to champion the spider-goddess Atropos, and the deepest of living nightmares draws her in. All around her Embris is dying, locked in the endgame of the Immortals’ war. The Idolater—a dark god and enslaver of the souls of butchered children—covets the sisters’ bloodline, in order to birth a deeper paradise from the ashes of the old. Elspeth finds herself torn in an epic struggle not only for her sister’s soul, but also for her own.

37 action adventure short story collection.

Action: Pulse Pounding Tales Vol. 1 by various authors

Quote:
Think back to the days when heroes were heroes and the action was furious and full-blooded. When often as not, the hero was quite the opposite: an anti-hero - but he needed to be, to bring the kind of violent justice to villains worse than him. When political correctness took a back seat, even as the bullets and karate chops were flying. Basically it was good old harmless fun. It was a case of disengaging your moral compass and getting down with the hero as they took on all comers, and they did it with balletic grace and uncompromising violence. Gratuitous? Mostly. Realistic? Not always. Great fun? You betcha!!!
Then fast forward to the here and now: What if the current action and thriller authors set their minds to bringing back the action genres of old?
Well, that question is answered here.
Within these pages you will find secret agents, vigilantes (both just and insane), cops, villains, soldiers, veterans, gangsters, swordsmen, privateers, Ninja and even a crypto-zoological beast you might recognise. Some of the tales are delivered with shocking realism, some as lighter entertainment, some on the grittier side, but each and every tale included in Action: Pulse Pounding Tales Volume 1 is sure to get your heart racing.

Another one for the adventurous. Debut self pubbed title (part one of four). Interestingly, one of the writers says in the intro that he doesn't claim to be a writer. Sample seems ok but the description reads like a video game.

Among the Fallen: Resurrection by Ross Shortall and Scott Beadle
http://www.amazon.com/Among-the-Fall...9027388&sr=1-1

Quote:
When Alexandra Beaumont awakens three months after her murder, she is thrown into a deadly biblical game where there can only be one winner. Alex is told by her guide to return to her quarantined city of Blackwater where she must hunt down and destroy the five demonic Fallen Judges - if just one still stands when the sun rises, the Fallen win and Hell will descend upon the Earth, wiping it clean of life as we know it.

But there's a catch - before she returned, a mystery virus hit the three million residents of Blackwater, they still walk the streets, but not as she remembers. As the game begins, Alex must not only find the judges, but she also has to unravel the mystery of her people's demise, her fathers Corporation's involvement and reveal the city's darkest secrets as the three worlds of the Living, the dead and the Fallen, all collide in chaos. As Alex struggles to come to terms with her own death, she wanders the war-torn streets of the dead trying to put together the unfortunate events that have forsaken her people.

The haunted streets of Blackwater lay in ruin, the buildings are strangled with rusted scaffolding, concrete has been turned into metal and the dead litter the streets; decorating the walls as the world of the Fallen chokes the unfortunate city - as Alex searches for her Fallen targets, she wanders and fights her way through the industrial nightmare, learning the abilities and the ways of the Fallen as she goes, struggling with her own fraying sanity.

Features

You remain at Alex's side the whole time, no meanwhile's, no deviations. You see, hear and know only what she does. Piece together the evidence in the form of Diaries, letters, reports, news pages etc.

Each Chapter is a location, the locations told in stunning detail and are just as important as the characters themselves, explore the apocalyptic city with Alex, see what she see's and feel what she feels.

Stunningly creative and macabre characters, some good, some bad, but all key players in the world of Among the Fallen.

Interwoven plot, remember the smallest of details, some maybe important; some may be worthless, you just never know.

Told in frightening third person point-of-view, you walk the dead streets and terrifying Chapter-fixed Locations as you wander from one side of the city to the other at Alex's side. See the carnage, feel the atmosphere, experience the emotion. With the second installment just a few months away, "Among the Fallen: Adflictio Cordia", Among the Fallen is a massive new world to experience, a whole new way of story telling, a whole new way of thinking.

Snow White & The Eighth Dwarf by E. L. Cline. Self pubbed fantasy. I didn't know there was an 8th dwarf.
http://www.amazon.com/Snow-White-Eig...9027918&sr=1-1

Quote:
Dhel was a loner by heart. The fact that only seven dwarven lords might live in a village was never a problem for him; in truth he preferred his modest cave. But when hunstmen sent by the Mage Queen strike deep into the heart of the Dark Forest to steal away with his beloved Snow White, he will set out into the world of men and magic to get her back.

And yet even his mighty ax might not be enough - the forest has secrets of its own.

I downloaded Among the Fallen, yeah I thought it read like a videogame to. It was ok. Bit disturbing to be honest, some great set pieces, bit too sadistic and gloomy for me though. good title
