mobipocket store pricing
ok, to get this out of the way: i think that ebooks offer a whole lot more functionality than a paper book.
BUT i also think that an ebook being more expensive than the hardcover is in no way justified. we had this with the sony connect store. they listened and adjusted the prices. now i find the same thing in the mobipocket store. for example the new warren ellis novel (crooked little vein): amazon (hardcover): $14.93 mobipocket: $17.93 see, i really want to save the trees and all, but there is no way i'm going to pay that kind of money for an e-version of a book. any idea if they will adjust the prices at the mobipocket store? |

They might adjust the price if you tell them about it. I found a book on Fictionwise that was still set as though the book was only in hardcover and they did manage to get it priced right for the paperback being out.
P.S. Thread moved since MobiPocket is more then just for the iLiad |

Maybe you should read the Mobipocket forum. The prices are set by the publishers. Mobipocket provides the platform to sell the books. Mobipocket can ask the publisher to reduce the prices nothing more.

I used ebooksearchr to find the following e-book versions of crooked little vein:
ereader.com: $17.95 ebooks.palm.com: $17.95 mobipocket.com: $17.95 powells.com (MS,Palm,Adobe): $15.26 ereader and ebooks indicate that the list price is $21.95, mobipocket does not say, and powells indicates that the list price is $17.95. The list price for the hardback is $21.95, but on-line retailers (e.g. Amazon) give heavier discounts than e-book sites. In fact, if most e-books sites are just "platforms" for publishers then none of them will give discounts. This is a problem because the list price of the hardback is much higher than its typical selling price, but the list hardback price is what is controlling the e-book price. |

Amazon.com's price for crooked little vein is actually more expensive then Powell's ebook price if you add in shipping from Amazon. It would be about $3-$4 more for shipping. I know Harry Potter #7 was going to be $3.99 for shipping.
