Need help installing 64bit Calibre on Win7

Hi, I've done everything I could think of
  • logged on as administrator
  • re-downloaded the installer
  • tried the 32-bit version
but, no matter what, each time the installer aborts.

Is there someone with more experience who can help me with this? I'm stumped.

Thanks

I am assuming that the installation just aborts with no message (seeing as you have not mentioned one).

In which case, even though you have been logged on as Administrator and despite what Calibre's permission rights may be, have you tried right clicking the .msi and selecting "Run as administrator"?

This will often result in the installation running correctly.

Hi, thanks for replying. The error message says that Calibre Setup Wizard terminated because of an error.

I tried turning off MSSE and downloading from different sources but these didn't help.

Unfortunately, I don't have the stamina to try the other options mentioned in the manual tonight.

I will resume tomorrow with a clear head.

Thanks again for your help.

You may have a corrupted download file. Try downloading again from a mirror. Make certain you start your download from http://calibre-ebook.com/download

AH!
Another possible victim of ISP (corrupted?) file caching.

Be sure to try using the SECURE download site at the bottom of the alternates

"Previous releases of calibre are available here.",

I downloaded the GitHub link, but no luck.

What worked was when I went to Advanced Options and set the two shortcut options to "will install when needed".

Finally, success!

I don't know why this worked; Maybe someone cleverer than me knows the explanation. I'm just happy to be able to try out Calibre.

Thanks again for all your help.

That smells like a permissions issue.

The Desktop Shortcut would normally be written to %USERPROFILE%\Desktop and the Start Menu Shortcuts to %SYSTEMDRIVE%\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs (maybe through a junction)

Do either of those locations have a padlock icon overlay, as in
