The page does not say which countries the books are free in. That makes it useless, since books are very often, for example, free in the USA but not elsewhere. With this page, though, there is no mention at all of where the book is free.

I'm assuming those have full Amazon DRM still, as they say its free for a limited time only? Or does Amazon add DRM to all their content, regardless?

I would not say useless since it does consolidate the free books in one page... kind of like the sticky in the Kindle section

Yes, but what country is the site checking for? Is it only for the USA? Is it setting its location to each of the 100-odd Kindle countries in turn, and checking for free books in each one? Without knowing, the information displayed is of extremely limited value.

Complain to Amazon (actually, AT&T and your country's tax dept) - all international readers will pay a minimum of $2 (for cell delivery due to higher costs than in the US) plus VAT. In the UK, that means a minimum of $2.30.

Or, just move to Disneyland (just not in France).

The charge does not appear to be for data delivery - it still applies even if you transfer the file via USB.

Free books listed on this site cost $2 30 in South Africa, those that are available and not all of them are. I suppose it is the cost of whispernet delivery.

I dont know of a way to check if they are limited to the US (unless I change the site manually all the time)

Amazon don't say that the charge is for data delivery. And I agree that Amazon are still charging it whether you opt for Whispernet delivery or not.

But the coincidence of $1.99 being charged for delivery outside home country, and the $2+VAT being added to book prices for countries outside the US is too much for me.

Amazon know that if they listed it as a data delivery charge, the Kindle would lose one what they consider its most attractive features - free and easy download without use of a computer.

So they just bundle it in the price, assuming that most people won't notice - after all, the ordinary consumer won't know what price the books are in the US store.

But I really object. So I've moved back to my apartment in Denver, and I download to my computer. (As otherwise I'd get charged $1.99 for downloads outside the US.)

The page is for USA. I wonder if Amazon provide any free ebook for international kindle users? They even charge $2+ for public domain ebooks, say, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington, which you can get it free through Gutenberg, Feedbooks, Manybooks...

Hmm... The lease may be up already. After downloading three or four freebies, I now get a message saying something along the lines of "Your Kindle location does match your stated location. Please call customer service, or change your country if you've recently moved"

With an already ludicrously long reading list, I can't be bothered trying to work around this just now, but it does look like Amazon are keeping close tabs on downloads.
