I'm over sixty. I've seen many a business—some of them giants—come and go. If you don't have your ebooks stored locally sans DRM, there's absolutely no guarantee you'll have access to them tomorrow.

Agreed. Plus Amazon's (and B&N) already dropped ebooks once and folks lost access to their books.

Not that times are the same now, but...

I learned my lesson when Agency Pricing arrived and I lost access to over two thirds of the ebooks in my Diesel library due to a sudden application of geo restrictions.

Everything is downloaded and DRM removed now as a matter of course.

In fairness to Amazon, when they stopped selling PDF books, they gave people something like a year's notice, so nobody could reasonably claim to have been caught unaware by the move.

Never said they were caught unaware (they sold LIT too).

Actually, I was caught unaware. At the time, I was on active duty, and was gone for the better part of 9 months on a duty posting to a very northerly and remote location, with very little comms around.

Came back to find all my previous Amazon purchases were gone. I swore then that I would never buy a book that I can't remove DRM from.

Cheers
