David Byrne Reviews the Kindle DX

I've been a long time David Byrne fan, especially from the Brian Eno and Talking Heads days. He's written a review of his thoughts and experiences with the Kindle DX. It's actually a better review then most of the gadget blogs I've seen.

Something to listen to while you read it...

Sweet! I am a huge talking heads fan, didn't know he had a blog. He's one of the more interesting artists in the industry imo.

Here’s where the rub is. This machine only reads Kindle files and PDFs. And nothing else out there reads Kindle files. It can read other types of files — Word DOCs, MOBI, TXT etc. — but you have to go through Amazon via email, where they’re converted for a small charge, then sent directly to your Kindle.
I wish there was some way to contact him because that is wrong.

You can drag MOBI/TXT over to the Kindle via USB or if you need something converted, you can mail it to your free Kindle account and then move it over via USB instead of having it delivered.

I think that he has a point on the whole though. The Kindle deserves to be criticized for its lack of format support. It's probably the most restrictive format-wise since the eBookwise, and Amazon needs to work on opening it up.
