SONY Offers to Update E-reader, breaks instead
This is amusing, and almost sounds too bizarre to be true. Any thoughts on how she can resolve this?

There was a story like this here on MR recently. Someone sent in their 500 to get the firmware update and due to unknown problems the device wouldn't take the firmware and also rendered the Reader useless. In this case they did offer the person either a 505 free of charge or a 600 at a discount.

I think Amazon is behind this...they get people's Sony readers, break them and send them back. People get angry and buy Kindles

No, seriously......why would anyone send a device back to the manufacturer on the basis of an email? When it was working perfectly and all previous updates were done directly from the device? I see nowhere in the article that a phone call was made before mailing it. Mailing label or no mailing label..... |

Doesn't anyone read the rest of this forum at all... assuming this Sony was a PRS500 then it needs to be returned for an update to use ePubs now they are the native Sony format and the store has changed to ePubs... and yes, Sony have sent emails to registered owners.
Doesn't alter the fact that they should replace it if they've then screwed it up! |

Yes, many members here sent their 500s in for a firmware update. Haven't heard of a problem until now.

I sent in a 500 to have the firmware updated and it was fine when it came back. The only thing was that the battery was discharged and needed charging. I did remove all content before sending it in and was easily able to put it all back.
