There's no real prestige in "releasing" an ebook like there is with games or comics, probably because of the older demographic.

By big players I was meaning the collection shares on sites such as Pirate Bay, certainly not just releasing because they think a book needs to be read but compiling thousands of files.

So do customers. As a group customers do not react well to invasions of their personal privacy.

I'm sure Amazon will stress that it is only the details of law breaking criminals that they have been forced to hand over.

No, it would just be the logical thing to do. Then if anyone spoke out about it they could just be dismissed with "Why are you supporting criminal behaviour?"
Or "We do not tolerate criminal activity with our Kindles and will assist rights holders in protecting their property". The mainstream media, at least, would accept this stance, assuming they bothered to report it at all.
