Splitting double page pdf to one page

I've got a pdf that's got two pages alongside, before the horizontal page-break. I'd like to automatically split the double-page vertically, and then save as a document of only horizontally split pages.

I assume this is a known problem and I seem to remember that I've seen a thread for it in the past, now I can't find it though.
What's the best way to solve the problem?

I think some of the ocr software bundles will do this... Abbyy Finereader comes to mind. I think they have a free version.

Oh does Briss do that?!! I thought it only cut the white space off the sheets...?
I'll check it out. I have been a very happy user of Briss in the past.

I use pdftoolkit (pdftk) to do this. But there is some preparation involved using Acrobat Pro and special scripts for pdftk. We call the side-by-side pages "spreads", which have to be cut in half (vertically) and reshuffled to make an 8.5x11 pdf.
