Maybe I'll give this another try. I've picked it up twice and put it back down. I just wasn't able to get into it. His writing style is fine, but Coraline is the only book of his that I've finished.

I thought I'd love it too. It's exactly the sort of thing that I like. but I've read the opening twice now, and it just didn't grab me.

I have to admit I struggled a bit the first time I read it, but it did finally hook me and I've read it twice since.

Suggestion - Try to stick with it until Shadow gets out of prison.

I'm still waiting to love Gaiman. One of these days, a new book of his and my tastes will mesh completely. I'm sure of it. But it's been a meh-affair so far.

Yes! That one completely slipped my mind. That's two of his books that I've liked enough to finish. It's funny that both are departures from his usual work.

I've read a fair amount of Gaiman, and American Gods is probably the best of his works not deliberately aimed at children. I'd think he'd do better if he lost the somewhat incestuous relationship he has with his fans, since you often get the feeling that he's writing at a particular audience, something that probably dates back to his breakthrough with Sandman.

I had to laugh on learning about the previous special edition of this book (with associated reading copy so you don't mess it up!) Can't help thinking of those people with shelves full of pristine toys in unopened boxes....

When authors release versions of books with extra text, it generally indicates that they are releasing the material that their editor very wisely decided was extraneous to the story. I very much doubt that it will improve the book.

I disagree. The books I can think of generally turned out better.

Feist's Magician Preferred edition is better, for example, because he cut some background material and other stuff...mainly because his publisher wanted less pages.

I'm sure that happens a lot.

Maybe it depends on the author.

Yes, I will agree that the expanded version of "Magician" is better, but generally, when an author gets sufficiently well-known that they think they no longer need editing, the results are... not beneficial to the reader.
