Hi does the kindle app have text to speech as I can't seem to find it

No, the free apps do not have text-to-speech, as Amazon has to license it from the developers. Only the Fires (of the currently sold readers) have text-to-speech. I'm not sure about the DX.

Amazon owns the developers. I believe they said there would be some kind of eventual support in the Android app, but don't remember where I saw it. Maybe when they announced support for the VoiceOver feature in iOS.

Until very recently, they didn't own the software company that creates text-to-speech, so they had to license it. If it is a wholly owned subsidiary, they would still have to pay the company to use the software, to keep the books straight. It would still be being treated as a separate company.

As alluded to above, Kindle for iOS has a very good VoiceOver implementation. You can use this to read out text. There is a bit of a learning curve but it works pretty well. And in the process you can learn how to operate your iOS device with your eyes closed. It is kind of surprising how few apps support VoiceOver, however.
