Thomas Pynchon to be ebooked

Quote:
After Long Resistance, Pynchon Allows Novels to Be Sold as E-Books
By JULIE BOSMAN

Thomas Pynchon was one of the last great holdouts: the rare writer who had refused to allow his work to be sold in e-book format.

Now he’s changed his mind.

Mr. Pynchon, the author of “The Crying of Lot 49,” “Gravity’s Rainbow” and “V.,” has struck a deal with the Penguin Press to publish his entire backlist in digital form.

The announcement is another step toward the ubiquity of the e-book, even for authors who stubbornly resisted.

A few years ago, e-book sales were tiny when compared with print sales, but in the last six months, it has not been uncommon for a new novel to sell more e-book copies than print ones. Authors whose work is not for sale in that format risk missing a large and growing segment of the reading population.....

I've never read Pynchon. Any recommends for an intro to Pynchon?

The Crying of Lot 49. If you like that you will probably like V. and Gravity's Rainbow. He tends to be a love him or hate kinda guy.

Haven't read anything else yet, but just picked up Inherent Vice

Very happy about this--Pynchon is one of those authors that I think might be easier to read in ebook format.

Too true - if only in weight! My HC copy of Against the Day is 4" thick and weighs more than my cat!

I always assumed that Pynchon's books were already available as e-books, if you get my meaning. I've never read any of his books but I thought the premise of one of them (I think "V") was intriguing: V-2 rockets landing wherever a certain person has been.

And A C Crispin has written some good Star Trek books. But V was just a horrible mess that should never have been a TV series let alone two of them.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that I was clicking the 'I'd like to read this on Kindle' links for Pynchon's books on Amazon. That was fast!! too bad this is Penguin, still Agency and still silly pricing (i.e. a bit higher than paperback editions, not to mention used editions).

Based on past experience, it will take me several months to read just one of them, but I do find the experience rewarding and am looking forward to reading them in ebook form over time. I simply cannot tolerate reading print books any more, as I travel a lot and it is hard to keep them conveniently at hand so that I can actually read them.

Seems like there is still a ton of 'backlist' that has yet to make it to digital, however.
