Last I read it's an opt-in feature that the user has to explicitly agree to.

They're not spying on my highlighting. I wouldn't use a Kindle if you paid me.

Hey, I've got an idea...

...post to the Amazon forums that everyone turn this on, and start highlighting the typos and OCR (scanning) errors. Wouldn't that skew their results? Might even be fun to see those results...

Seriously - if readers did this on a large scale, the volume just might get some attention. Whether any action results - who knows?

They agreed to Amazon storing the data, not using it. Amazon need to inform everyone who changed this setting before they started using the data (assuming this is explicitly spelled out on the opt-in page, if it's not then they need to do it with all even now) and seek their explicit permission.

Or they're just pulling a Facebook.

They already have your notes and highlights; they've always backed them up for you, along with the last page read so you could sync to the furthest page read. Now, all they're doing is, when at least three people make the same highlight in a book, they anonymously state, "15 people found this passage interesting". It's just the highlights not the," Lol, funny!" note you made in your books.

Nothing spy-like about it. And if you don't like it, Amazon explains how you can opt out....

This is not a big deal. It's no different than on the book pages; "Customers who bought this were also interested in..." And nook stores one's highlights as well, they're providing a service, not data grabbing.

I think this is a nice feature and like particularly the idea of using it to show Ocr/spelling/formatting errors in books.... if enough people highlight these mistakes, it might actually make a difference in how carefully people check over their works before publishing them to the kindle store.

Nuts to that. If you start using people's data in any substantive new way, the only ethical thing to is to get their permission. "It's no big deal" is Facebook's argument, as they share your personal data with the world.

How is a highlight personal data?

It's no different from buying a used book with a few passages underlined. Again, highlights, like passages underlined, NOT notes in the margins!

Probably not..but then again, I'm pretty sure AOL said the same thing:

and Netflix as well:
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/200...30297412.shtml

Anyways, always easier to make these things as clear as possible beforehand. While most people may not care, the ones who do tend to be pretty vocal about it.

I don't see what the problem is. There is no identifying information in it, just the highlight itself. It's anonymous, and only if more than three people highlight the same section in a book.

If you don't want anything you do tracked, don't interact online. Don't buy stuff online; don't buy devices that work online; don't have e-mail; don't transact anything online. The CIA has carte blanche to listen to anything anyone does under the guise of "anti-terrorism". Every piece of mail you send or receive probably goes through a US mail server at some point and is subject to US intervention that is entirely legal.

The net, and modern inter-connectedness is what it is: ubiquitous. There are ways to opt out -- but you can't play in the game AND opt out. Given that e-readers require the Internet to purchase, transfer, manager their accounts ... it's a bit difficult to stay 100% anonymous. Amazon isn't some horrendous Big Brother: it's a bookseller and it's shtick is communal involvement. That's it's strength. If that doesn't appeal, by all means go back to buying used or new paperbacks. Just make sure you pay in cash.

Or you can demand basic ethics of the companies you deal with.
Like asking before they use your data in new ways.

The entire point is just because someone may look at some of your data, it doesn't mean companies need to have carte blanch to use the data they have from you as they wish.

You certainly COULD opt in to Amazon storing your data and opt out them them doing anything BUT storing it, suggesting anything else is bluntly disingenuous and basically saying "well you can use this basic feature, but you wave your rights just because you want to use something you bought the device for". It's bad ethics, period - it's no different from Facebook's stunts.
