It is a good point, but there's a big difference between bringing up political elements of a novel while discussing it, and an free-for-all thread about religion or politics, such as the current "under attack" threads.

I'm pretty happy with the solution. Anyone compelled to remain opted-out is probably not at all interested in the religo-political discussions anyway. While mobileread is friendlier than most, these discussions still get somewhat heated, and are really a dime a dozen on the Internet anyway. Having a sanctuary from such discussions can often be a breath of fresh air. And the beauty here is that the sanctuary exists by default, but the hard-core debates are there if you want them.

I don't think that this will please some but I, for one, am quite happy to see it all (hopefully) moved here. Thank you very much.
We plan to increase the moderation of topics to guide people to the new section and may resort to deletion if needed. The idea is to allow that sort of debate a place to live and keep it from becoming a topic by proxy in the rest of the fora.

It's great that you banned such fairy tales like religion in special 'forum threads'.

Just as long as we don't ban fairy tales... I like Hans Christian Anderson et al!

Great solution.

It's these kinds of insensitive comments that made this action necessary.

One of the best things about MR is that the majority of members here are considerate of all the different personalities and beliefs of the people posting. It takes all kinds to make the world an interesting place and that's what MR is. . .interesting!

Thanks, Alex and Mods!

Perhaps copyright and DRM discussions could join that forum as well? I think I won't opt-in, as I usually end up posting there in reply to a particularly outrageous post, so it will be best if I don't read such posts at all.

I like it Alex, et.al...

One request, if somebody is off-topicing a thread into one of those areas, could one request the post be branched into the "religion and politics" thread?

I personally plan to remain opt-ed out.

I want light-hearted worldviews (but you're always welcome at my campfire, Recluse). I get enough righteousness elsewhere in my life.

Yeah, I can see that happening. Technically, I think we can branch off a thread elsewhere. What I imagine we (mods) might do on a case-by-case basis is sort-of do this manually. That is, if reported/noticed, we might as mods gently enter the thread and suggest to the poster of the P&R post that they start a thread in that P&R sub-forum, perhaps linked back to the origin thread for context. Of course, fuzzy lines will likely always exist too.

That was my immediate thought, but maybe that's because I'm easily confused by divergence.

Cheers,
Marc
