Publisher HarperCollins has appointed its first e-book chief. The company has named Margot Schupf as editorial director, digital publishing for the Morrow/Avon/Eos group.

I hope it's a good sign that the publishers are going to start taking ebooks more seriously.

The cynic in me worries that this person's job is to work out new DRM partnerships and arrange exclusives with different ebook resellers.

Quote:
“I thought it would be interesting to come at e-books from a content perspective,” Ms. Schupf said. “A lot of people are coming at it from a marketing and distribution perspective.”
A good sign though.

"create new opportunities from the backlist"

Indeed - I hope to see more publishers finally marketing ENTIRE series and author runs - not just the last 2 books published, or the apparent random sampling.

That would be great, also bundles, proper 'collections' of work that you can buy all at once. Ebooks are perfect for this kind of sale, and if you make it enough of a bargain, they'll fly off the digital shelves.

Dear All:

Over the last year, Astak has had many talks with Haroer Collins and found we were always dealing with a woman... which was a pleasure. I am not surprised at all that their new eBook Chief is a woman. I think it is great!!
