foghat, go to the first post in the 'calibre + iPad:start here' thread, scroll down to 'if you have problems', then follow the instructions for getting your iPhone USB info, then post it in that thread.

Dictionary lookup still not working in iBooks
I downloaded the Calibre 0.7.5 update, converted a book to ePub format and loaded the book on my iPad.... and still in iBooks I am getting the "Dictionary not available for this language" error message when I try to use the dictionary function.
Did the announced fix for iBooks dictionary lookup not get implemented in Calibre 0.7.5? |

Is your interface language set to English in Preferences?
If so, start calibre in debug mode by typing Code:
calibre-debug -g G Last edited by GRiker; 06-26-2010 at 04:50 AM. |

Still a problem in 0.7.7
Using 0.7.7 and the UI to convert a mobi to epub. Then saved the epub to disk and added it manually to itunes. Sync to ipad and iphone and I still get the "Dictionary not available for this language." error in ibooks.
English is the language set in calibre preferences. I do not wish to use calibre to manage my books on the ipad and iphone. All I would like is calibre to generate a epub with a valid language setting. Any idea when this will be fixed? |

It definitely is fixed in 0.7.7. I reconverted a bunch of my Mobi books to ePub with 0.7.7, checked them, and they all had "<dc:language>en</dc:language>" in the OPF.
Take a look inside one of your ePUb files (rename it to ".zip", open it, and look at the file with the ".opf" extension). What is the value of the "<dc:language>" tag? |

<dc:language>UND</dc:language> That is what my freshly converted epubs show in the OPF file. They were converted and saved to disk using 0.7.7. I converted several files and they all have this still.
Edit: This is on OSX 10.6.4 Last edited by KPHarg; 07-04-2010 at 07:14 PM. Reason: added OS |

Ah - perhaps this is an OS/X issue, in that case. It's definitely working under Windows.

So apparently iBooks 1.1.1 fixes the dictionary issue without having the metadata changed...why do I get the feeling this is going to see-saw back and forth for a bit
