It's an EU ruling. eBooks are considered "computer software" rather than books. So even though books are "zero rated" for VAT in the UK, we still have to pay the standard rate of VAT for eBooks.

thanks for that clarification harry (although even now that i have the reason, it *still* makes no sense to me). i suppose it's reassuring to see that the french are not alone with this illogical double standard.
