From India, the predecessor of modern chess spread to Persia and when the Arabs conquered Persia, the game was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Southern Europe.

We are actually in November of 2013 if you think about it. The calendar jumped from 1 B.C. to 1 A.D. without counting the year 0. Of course that's only by 1 particular calendar out of many.
