Should I bother to read silence of the lambs?
The movie is such a classic and the performances by Jodie foster and Anthony Hopkins are so indelible that it's hard to think I'll be able to read the book without constantly comparing it to the movie. Also, there's not going to be much suspense.
I did read Hannibal before seeing the movie. It was sort of fun in its over the top Grand guignol style. |

For what it's worth, I enjoyed the book more than the movie. The movie is one of my favorites, still. But, I liked the book more.

The book is a must read IMO if you are a fan of this genre. In fact, I would add Red Dragon as well and actually read RD before SotL as the sequence will be chronologically correct.

I agree with those who've posted before me. The movie was excellent, and so was the book. I enjoyed the others in the series, too. Well worth reading. (I read the books after seeing the movie.)

The books are actually quite good and give you the material that allowed Anthony Hopkins to portray such a great character.
The bad movies ("Red Dragon", "Hannibal") should be avoided. I started "Hannibal Rising" (the 4th novel) with some trepidation after the so-so "Hannibal" movie, but got caught up in novel and the character. So if you are going to read - do the novels in order:
You will thank us later. |
