K3 USB cable has a strange smell?
Silly question, but does anyone else who has a K3 have a USB cable that has a very strong "plasticy" smell? I have mine plugged in to my PC about 3 feet away and I can smell it from here. I hope it goes away after a few days.

lol.
Maybe it's a substitute for those who like sniffing their pbooks. |

Think of it as a "feature."

If it smells like burnt plastic or feels warm to the touch please unplug it before you burn your house down! Though unlikely to catch fire if attached to your PC, it pays to be uber safe.

No, nothing like that. I noticed the smell as soon as I opened the Kindle box. Nothing to do with it being plugged in or not. Just out-gassing from the plastic, I think.

If the smell grows on you, there's probably a spray you could use.

I bet it will die down soon. They rub a particulate petroleum product on some cables to keep them supple.
But I really like the idea that it gives you something to "sniff". Like a nicotine patch for all the deadtree converts... -BVL |

My brother and I used to call it the "action figure farts" smell, because action figures had it when you opened their plastic boxes, and they were, you know, farting in there.
Anyway -- many plastic things have it We were 10. Don't judge. |

It's a new feature which Amazon is trying to bring to the market. Remember that "new car" smell? Amazon has coined the "new e-ink reader" smell.

That was my impression as soon as I took the cable out of the box. It reminded me of the vinyl baby dolls my sisters had when we were kids.

Eugh a "plasticy" smell sounds horrid. Could you perhaps rub a scent you like on it - a small amount of aftershave or something to mask the pong? Or even a room freshener near by sounds like it would be preferable although I prefer fresh air over any artificial scents.

Hmmm you can try keeping the cable in a small bag filled with charcoal. Charcoal has a characteristic of absorbing the gas particles/molecules, which cause the smell. And it's harmless.

You guys made such a fuss about this issue, that people on another forum are now quoting you as the reason not to buy Kindle 3.

My Kindle has reached the "dispatching soon" stage, but I've spent some time sniffing the Burgundy cover ~ and a fine whiff it delivers too. When opening parcel, I'll quarantine the cable and hope to give the Kindle the K a good sniff. Does it smell?
