Communicaton Error again
Hi, I'm having the same problem again of transferring books from my library to my Sony ereader. The error is:

Please wrap actual error messages in a "spoiler" tag so our screens don't fall onto the floor.
A Sony expert will be along shortly |

Hopefully we will find an answer to the problem. For future reference how do I "wrap actual error message in a spoiler tag"? I thought I was very clever just being able to copy it to my message!

That error is an IOError, indicating calibre could not write to a location, either in the storage card or the main memory of your device. First thing to see is if it is the storage card. Try a different storage card and see if that works.

Kovid, I don't have any storage cards, only the main memory. I have just tried it again, and the first 2 books were fine but with the third I tried I got the same error as previously. With the first two books I manually selected the main memory, with the third I clicked on "send to device" and this one failed. I am trying to load another one at the moment by manually selecting the main menu, but it has now been trying for11 minutes, so I would guess this will fail as well.

The error is happening when calibre tries to write the sony's database. I have seen similar errors in other situations when the file being written exceeds some magic microsoft-determined size.
Questions: 1) What version of windows are you running? 2) How many books do you have on your reader? 3) Do you have lots of collections? 4) Do the collections contain many books? |

I am just ignoring all the errors this week as I assume they are operator induced
How I managed to have all the file names (shown under info on the PRS-600) having the calibre folder number appended to them is beyond me. Now I have a kindle 3 which I got for my mother and it seems to induce add_book errors. My mantra of the week is if you get it on the reader and read it, who cares what it is called and how it is sorted. My brain obviously needed a holiday and will be back in town eventually |

Hmmmm... perhaps it is time for a tweak. One could set the tweak and then reload the reader from scratch, eliminating both the duplicates problem and the number. |

Perhaps you could tweak my brain for me. I always get duplicates when I send a book that is already on the Sony reader, as many as 6 with no changes whatever on the last 5, I was just curious.
On the Kindle no duplicates unless I change the author or title and no appended folder number. I do get this error but it has probably been addressed elsewhere... 1) If the number is removed, then sending a book to the sony will overwrite any book on the sony that matches the device file template. Assuming that the template has author and title in it, this seems like correct behavior. If the number is there, then you will get another copy unless the number magically matches (vanishingly low probability). 2) Removing the number has no effect on device book matching across libraries. Did I answer the question? |

didiyy - sorry, we seem to have hijacked your thread
chaley Sort of answered, it was the 'from scratch' I was half-worried about as some people may not have a backup of some books on their reader (not me I've learned that lesson! ), and I wasn't sure how you were going to redo/reset the reader's library. As long as your assumption regarding author/title is correct, there shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps have a warning, if writing to device and both aren't included in template. |
