Ah, thanks. I had used synaptic - maybe you can tell canonical to remove calibre from their repository?

Maybe you should tell them since you were the one affected. Kovid does not police or supply any of the repository versions of calibre.

Additionally do not use repository versions of calibre. To install calibre on a Linux box follow the guidelines for a binary install located here.

Ubuntu's official policy is the version of an application that a particular version of Ubuntu ships with is the version the application stays at. They rarely do version bumps and instead recommended using a PPA for newer versions.

That said Ubuntu, to my knowledge, has never shipped a fully working package of calibre. Other distros can get it right but Ubuntu doesn't care.
