Post Dickens, Charles: Nicholas Nickleby (Illustrated). v7. 16th Oct 2009

On his comical and satirical adventures up and down the country, the eponymous here of Dickens' "Nicholas Nickleby" confronts a large and varied cast of characters, including Wackford Squeers, the fantastic ogre of a schoolmaster, and Vincent Crummles, the grandiloquent ham actor. Punishing wickedness, befriending the helpless, strutting the stage, and falling in love, Nicholas shares some of his creator's energy and earnestness as he faces the pressing issues of early Victorian society.

Contains the 39 original black and white illustrations by "Phiz".

Enjoy!

EDIT: 26 Dec 07

Replaced words in capitals with italics to match the printed version, as appropriate. Created a proper MobiPocket version of the book with large pictures, library data correctly shown, working table of contents link, etc. Uploaded v3.

EDIT: 6 Jan 08

Added a list of characters. Changed the formatting of the table of contents to make it less cluttered. Uploaded v4.

EDIT: 19 Mar 08

Improved the layout of the book. Uploaded v5.

EDIT: 22 Nov 08

Thoroughly proof-read the book and compared it against a printed edition. Hundreds of minor corrections made. The book is now in a pretty good state. Uploaded v6.

EDIT: 16 Oct 09

Replaced the cover to be consistent with the rest of the MR Dickens series. Removed some errors in the HTML coding of the book - this has no impact on the reader. Uploaded v7.

Thanks again for these, HarryT. I have a quick question for you. I have downloaded some other prc's from the site, and have followed your tutorial for converting them to your 'proper' format. They show up much, much nicer on the Kindle that way. I take the .prc, load it into BD where most of the editing has already been done, and then I add the page breaks, and other formatting (I add an author photo as per your tutorial from Wikipedia since any illustrations are stripped when I load it into BD). Then I do the text editing to replace the pagebreaks, remove the align=justify, and run it through Mobi Creator so the metadata is correct. Do you think that this is enough for me to re-up it, even though the bulk of the work was done by someone else? I'm just thinking that a lot of Kindle users would like the way it shows up as well. I could show screen shots if you want to see how bad it looks unless it's done your way, on the browser screen. It's awful.

Also, would you happen to know how I could make it so that when I open a Kindle book it starts directly at the cover? Right now they load up at the first chapter, bypassing the cover jpg and the title/author, and author jpg. I've tried a few things, but nothing works yet. You're far better at these programs than I am, although, thanks to your tutorials I'm getting better. Soon I'll be adding my own books, thanks to you.

tart: if the "start" type of subitem is present, the action defined in the onclick is performed whenever the ebook is opened.

<guide> <reference type="start" title="Index Search" onclick="index_search()"/> </guide>
So if you replace index_search with the Java script code to go to beginning of document it might work. Or just have an empty value maybe.

I think it would be rather rude to re-upload someone else's book without asking their permission first. You have, after all, used their work as your starting point.

I, for example, am constantly revising my books and wouldn't want other versions of what I've done re-uploaded, because as I made my improvements to the original, the different versions would get out of step and be very confusing for downloaders. For that reason, therefore, I would prefer that you didn't re-upload versions of the books that I've done. Any books that I create in the future will have a "proper" Mobi version from the outset.

You could of course send the uploader a PM and ask them if they mind. Perhaps other people will feel differently about it.

Thanks Harry, I figured as much, which is why I asked in the first place. I'll just continue to load the prc's into BD and make the changes for myself then. And I'll watch regularly for your new additions. Thanks for all your work.

Thanks, tompe, I'll give that a shot.

This is excellent, but I have noticed that the caption under the picture in chapter 37 contains some errors.
"imitates" instead of "intimates"
"approvalof" instead of "approval of"
and possibly "the" instead of "his"
