NYPL Non-Resident program gone

I did a search but couldn't find anything that covered this...but it was a quick search, so please excuse me if this is in another thread.

I went to NYPL site to request a non-resident card, and was advised that program has recently been discountinued. I've pasted the email below as there are links to other NY based libraries that have similar programs.

My local library has ebooks, but their selection downright stinks

Again, sorry if this is a repeat!

__________________________________________________ ________

Sorry, NYPL no longer offers a non-resident library card.

The New York Public Library itself is open without restriction to anyone who visits (a full listing of NYPL locations can be found online here: http://www.nypl.org/locations).

The Library also offers a number of Web sites that are open to anyone with a computer and a sense of curiosity. These include our Digital Galleries (http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/ ), our Picture Collection Online (http://digital.nypl.org/mmpco/ ), and a number of linksites compiled by librarians, including Best of the Web (http://www.nypl.org/collections/nypl...ns/best-of-web ).

The Library also subscribes to a number of databases (http://www.nypl.org/collections/arti...guage=&limit=1 ) that we make available to NYPL library card holders (http://www.nypl.org/help/library-card ). This includes eBooks, e-video, and e-audiobooks (http://ebooks.nypl.org ) to which NYPL subscribes and are provided by the company OverDrive.

Information on NYPL library cards can be found here:
http://www.nypl.org/help/library-card

To check out materials from NYPL, you'll need a Branch Libraries library card - "... A Branch Libraries' card is free to anyone who lives, works, pays property taxes, or attends school in New York State. ..." So again, sorry, but based on what you've written, you're not eligible for an NYPL library card. NYPL used to offer a non-resident library card for $100 per year, however this program was recently discontinued.

You might want to review the list of eBook participating libraries, provided by Overdrive (http://www.overdrive.com) to find a library that has a non-resident library card. Here's a link to a list of Public Libraries Offering OverDrive Digital Books: http://search.overdrive.com/

You can use the following Web sites to find the sites for the libraries listed by Overdrive:
http://lists.webjunction.org/libweb/

The Brooklyn Public Library offers a collection of emedia:
http://digitalbooks.brooklynpublicli...en/Default.htm

They also offer a non-resident card for $50 per year:
http://brooklynpubliclibrary.org/bor....jsp?card=true

The Queens Library also offers a non-resident card for a $50 annual fee:
http://www.queenslibrary.org/index.a...d+Registration

We hope this helps!

Yeah, they discontinued that quite a while ago. The Free Library of Philadelphia has non-resident cards for $15 although that may not last as some pubs are wanting Overdrive stuff restricted to a libraries normal coverage area.

Well what about people who don't have a local library with ebooks? I went to Overdrive and found the next county over participates, so I got a card today. Get on their site, and it turns out they're all audio, not ebooks. So I wasted a trip for nothing and still have no way to borrow ebooks : ( I'm mailing an application to the Free Library of Philadelphia tomorrow.

Well - in the view of the Publisher they mostly don't seem to be all that concerned whether or not you have access to Overdrive Library books. They'd prefer you log onto a retailer and buy - pay special attention to the $14.99 listings please.

As of right now Philadelphia is still issuing out of area cards and so is the Singapore Library (free) last I heard. As readers, we just have to take the changes as they come.

I imagine that if Philadelphia changes their policy it will simply stop issuing new Out of Area cards and then everybody will get to ride out the remainder of time left on their current cards. That is what NYPL did when they discontinued.

I received my Philadelphia Free card, but haven't used it yet. Turns out living in the DC metro area actually has a perk...the DC Public Library has a huge ebook selection. I've already ripped through 4 books and am on my fifth, with 4 more borrowed on my ereader waiting! They offer 7, 14 and 21 day borrows. I've had a couple books I put holds on, and received emails when they were avail. I'm quite pleased! DC is NOT completely worthless like I thought!

I think the Philadelphia Free Library has increased their feet to $35/yr.

I live in the DC area too. Maryland's selection is good but small; DC has a large collection. Between the 2 libraries, I've checked out over 300 books in the past year and a half it seems

I sent a check for $15 with my application and they sent me my card last week...if they raised their fee, I must have snuck in under the radar

Just a note for anyone that will be visiting DC, MD or VA...

If you live outside these areas [DC, MD or VA], you may apply for a regular library card by visiting the Martin Luther King Library in person. The cost is $20, and the card is good for one year. (per their website).
