Trollope, Anthony: The Kellys and the O’Kellys, v.1, 19 Jan 2008.

From an Amazon review:

Trollope's second novel, written in 1848 after he had worked in Ireland on Post Office business for a year, is about two young men who seek wealthy wives. One is an impoverished peer, the other his distant cousin who is a tenant on his land. Each finds a suitable heiress, falls in love with her, nearly loses her, then wins her in the end. Many components of Trollope's fiction are already present in The Kellys and the O'Kellys: unidealized heroes, feisty young women, a consideration of the social role of clergymen, a great deal of enthusiastic fox hunting, and naturalistic dialogue. It also reflects Trollope's love of the Irish people, whom he had come to know well--an element that probably interfered with the novel's popularity: Irish novels were not in fashion, perhaps because the reality of the potato famine was too depressing for English readers to contemplate.
