In case you guys have not seen this Forbes article yet:

Quote:
Let the Ebook Price Wars Begin: Three Ebook Pricing Predictions

In case you haven’t been paying attention, there’s been a little flap over the past year about ebook pricing. Nothing too important to worry about — just a Justice Department lawsuit alleging price-fixing conspiracy, a major settlement with billion-dollar implications and an upcoming court date between Apple, Penguin, Macmillan and the DOJ that should feature some special guests, including Amazon.

We’ve reached an interesting point in the saga: All three publishers that settled with the Department of Justice to resolve an ebook price-fixing lawsuit have now fulfilled the first and most important part of their agreements — sign new ebook deals with their retail partners.

Simon & Schuster was the last to sign a new deal with Amazon and others — putting its new agreement into place this weekend. Hachette had its new deal up and running earlier this past week. And HarperCollins was very early out the gate with a new deal in early Sept. All of this could be good news for price-conscious ebook buyers.

Wait, Australians are willing to pay $30 (to be clear, US Dollars?) for ebooks? Or are those books that nobody ends up buying because they are too expensive?

I think it is a compilation of several books. However, you can buy it directly from Simon & Schuster for $14.99.

Well, an author's mum might have.

Don't think many other people are stupid enough to, no, given the sales ranks.

Not when you can get an American version or the identical UK version with a different address for 1/4 or 1/3 the price.

In the US it's cover under the 1998 Sonny Bono copyright extension act which is what extends things to 2021. Not sure about someplace like the UK, would it be a straight life plus 70 or do they have agreements that recognise the longer copyright in the US? IIRC we won't see anything new enter the PD in the US until around 2019 or something like that.

No-one recognises longer copyrights from another country's laws.

Some countries follow the rule of the shorter term, where foreign items fall out of copyright when they become public domain in their home (foreign) country, even if they would still be in copyright if by a native author.

The price at Simon & Schuster is coming up $32.05 for me also.

Yes, it's a reprint of the first 4 titles. The fifth published separately is $8.00. That may be how they came up with $32.00 but it was $14.99 during Agency pricing.

No, that's not their logic. They're applying a discount of 27% to the current print list price ($43.99, since it's a POD, not offset).
