New user frustrations

Hello,

I am trying to import a large existing collection to Calibre with the least possible effort -- but I still seem to have to do quite a bit of manual work.

One big issue is I have several series of german pulp magazines organized as such:

Folder: Series Name
Sub-Folder: Series - Series Number - Issue Title
Multiple format(s): Series - Series Number - Title . extension (PDF, DOC, TXT)

If I import by file name, Calibre correctly sets Title, Series, and Series Index
If I import by metadata, Calibre correctly sets Cover Image and Author

So either way I have a LOT of manual work left ahead of me. Are there any features I'm missing that would make my work easier?

BTW I am using Windows 7.

Also -- is there a way to get Calibre to store series(es) by series name and all other books by author name? I'm concerned that I'm going to have too many subfolders under "unknown" or too many author folders in the root.

Unfortunately, importing ebooks will always have manual steps because:

1) most ebooks end up having all kinds of mixed metadata, there doesn't seem to be any standards being followed

2) everyone seems to want to have their ebooks managed differently

I don't think there's any way to eliminate the manual portions until there's some well defined standard ebook format with a standard for the metadata. There will still be issues with everyone wanting their books managed in a particular way

Alas, that was what I feared.
Is there a way to script rescanning pdfs to extract cover images?
