Deal: "The Curse of Chalion" $0.99 Epic Fantasy (Kindle/Nook/Kobo/Sony)

"The Curse of Chalion" by Lois McMaster Bujold is on sale all around: $0.99, regular price $7.99. It is one of my favorite books, Bujold at her best, so good that I paid the full price just a couple of months ago. Well, it's good assuming that you like character-oriented, epic fantasies.

Quote:
Betrayed by an unknown enemy into slavery, former soldier and courtier Lupe dy Cazaril escapes his bondage and returns to the royal household he once served. Entrusted with the teaching of the sister to the heir to the throne of Chalion, Cazaril finds himself drawn into a tangled web of politics and dark magic as he battles a curse that threatens the lives and souls of a family he has come to love. The author of the "Vorkosigan" series of dynastic sf turns her hand as competently and engagingly to the fantasy genre in a tale of quiet heroism and self-sacrifice. Compelling characters and richly detailed world building make this a strong addition to fantasy collections.

Very good book. Sort of based on a magical Spain before the Reconquista, with the political goal being a union of two realms (think Ferdinand and Isabella). Cazaril is an engaging, believable hero, while the magic system is unique.

I agree. In fact, the second book in the series got the Hugo Award for Best Novel, the Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel, although I believe that "The Curse of Chalion" is better.

It is indeed a superb book, by one of my favourite authors.

Like the other two in this series (The Paladin of Souls, and The Hallowed Hunt) as part of the fantasy there are intriguing (but very different from what we are used to) religious themes.

If you like this series I strongly recommend her four book The Sharing Knife series.

I'll also chime in that this is a terrific book, and a real steal at .99 cents.
