ePub format launches at Fictionwise: 50% off all MultiFormat titles!

Fictionwise has started to include the ePub format for its multiformat (unencrypted) titles.

Quote:
Today we began adding ePub files to Fictionwise (over 16,000 are already online) and the rest of our MultiFormat eBooks will be online by the end of the week. ePub is an eBook file format that is gaining popularity with both publishers and consumers. As part of our launch of unencrypted ePub eBooks, we are offering all our MultiFormat titles with a 50% discount.

That trumps the 30% discount they were offering me for some titles in my wish list. Yay! Excuse to buy new books!

*edit*
Most of the books I want at FW are in Secure Mobi or eReader (which I don't want to convert), and not likely to become available in multi-format any time soon, so this is no big deal for me.

Although, the more ePub suppliers the better.

I just checked out an ePub version of a short story that I already bought, it is much nicer than the Mobi version.

Thumbs up to Fictionwise.

Well, this allowed me to buy all of Harlan Ellison's stuff for $130.00, $5.00 per ebook, so that's quite reasonable.

Good news! I hope all DRMed books will be available in DRM free ePub format very soon!

And they used calibre v0.5.1 to create the .epub's of some of my multi-format ebooks, i.e. from metadata.opf:
Code:
        <dc:contributor opf:role="bkp" opf:file-as="calibre">calibre (0.5.1) [http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net]</dc:contributor>

Yeah, it's nice to see. Fictionwise have been using calibre for a long time though, they used it to introduce the LRF version of their multi-format books as well.

Huzzah! Just in time for their forthcoming release of a bunch of my backlist titles! They're supposed to go up in a few weeks. I hope they're still offering the price break then, because they will be DRM-free multiformat.

(And yes, I'd much rather sell more books at a lower price.)

That's interesting, and encouraging. I had to do a lot of finicky formatting on some of my forthcoming titles. I had to do it in RTF, because that's what they take from ereads and the author, but I used Calibre to test and see if what I was doing might survive the formatting. Now my hopes may be justified!

How can Fictionwise stay in business? Multiple formats of ebooks? I thought that Ebook production costs were similar to pbooks?
