We can take my 1001 list and then narrow it down from there by showing what is available on MR (which I've actually done, but hasn't been updated in a while). For Classics, that is.

How about Hard SF one month and Fantasy another. Most people agree on the differences, although some books could fit in both genres.

I think December would be good month for "classic"... but what would that mean? Any book that is in the public domain? Any book written before 1932?

I have to say, I don't like those two.

I also agree... February seems to be the month for romance... considering Valentines day and all.

Also, someone mentioned 3 weeks of nominations... I think that is to long... but they schedule WAS designed to have the book picked before the first of the month... but some categories were to hard so I just let it go on longer.

I think if we change the list to Genre and "must be an ebook" would keep the categories broad enough to get 10 nominations within a week and defined enough so that we could easily know if a book fit for the month.

I would also like to keep the schedule static each year (yes I know this is early to say) which would mean whatever we decide for Nov and Dec would be what we did for this nov and dec too.

Not to add another genre into the mix, but what about replacing one of the sci-fi/fantasy months with poetry? I'm pretty sure there's loads of public domain works out there, and even if we didn't do a "book" per se, we could pick a poet and make a list of major poems to read (Poe and "The Raven" for example).

Nice idea... and how about a play one month?

I guess my point was more that the months book being known further ahead of time. So we'd vote for December's book in October, January's book in November, etc. It's just a thought, but other clubs I've done over the years have done something like that and having a bigger window to get and read the months book usually meant more participation.

Yes, I get what you are saying. I also wonder if it might be to far removed from when the book would actually be read. If I am nominating for a book I know I want to read in the next week or two I am more engaged in the nominations than if it is for 1 or two months away.

But, what does the group think? Should we nominate a full month ahead?

BOb

(Also, I just updated my textexpander snippets to create the nominations automatically for the next month. )

Nothing saying you have to wait until December to read the December book (you just have to wait to discuss it), but I see what you're saying.

Don't you think that poetry and plays are a little too "specialised" to dedicate two months to? People can always nominate them in one of the "open" months if they wish to, but I can't see them being very popular myself. Just a personal opinion, of course.

I greatly enjoyed the Mystery category this month. It had been years since I'd read a mystery and I hope the categories for next year are equally challenging. I do note that it has been suggested twice that Science Fiction and Fantasy be split with one in one month and the other in another month. I strongly support this concept. I am not sure whether splitting the Mystery/Thriller category is as good an idea since I am not as familiar with thrillers vs mystery. One category that seems to be missing is Western, not sure how appealing it would be to all but it is a category that I've been meaning to read again.

I was disappointed to see History/Historical Fiction dropped, there are some very good books in those categories here at MR.
