I've read four. All of which were quite good reads. Should be an interesting vote.
Thanks for taking this on caleb72. |

Great idea for a list and an interesting group of books, caleb. I'll have the poll up soon!
ETA - The poll is up here. Also, just saw this - The nominator doesn't vote in the poll. If the poll and run-off both end in a tie though, you'll be the tie-breaker. Last edited by sun surfer; 06-01-2015 at 02:11 PM. |

Who would like to take their turn selecting the nominations for the upcoming rotating month in August?

Well, I did say I'd be willing to do this soon and August is as good a month for me as ever. I'm still recovering from my surgery, which turned out to be a little more complicated than expected, but I should be back to reasonably normal, two-handed typing within the next couple of weeks.
One thing I'd like clarified: Nominated books can't be previous selections, but can they be previous nominees? I don't having any in mind, I'm just wondering. |

August is yours, ccowie! I'll ask for your nominations at the beginning of the month.
Good luck on your recovery. Nominees can be previous nominees, just not previous selections of either book club. ETA - FYI for anyone interested, here is the list of lit club selections and here is the list of general club selections. Last edited by sun surfer; 07-17-2015 at 05:43 PM. |

Hello my friends.
It seems that those responsible for rotating months have tried to adhere to a theme with their selections. Originally I thought I would like to choose literary works with an immigrant theme. But, as I began looking deeper I widened the list to any kind of “fish-out-of-water” experience. I really wanted one Sci Fi book on the list and could have picked many. Heinlein may not immediately be considered “literary,” but it is award winning, considered a classic by many and continues to resonate with new readers. So, here are the August selections: The Fortunate Pilgrim by Mario Puzo. Spoiler:
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair Spoiler:
The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love by Oscar Hijuelos Spoiler:
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides Spoiler:
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz by Mordecai Richler Spoiler:
Tirra Lirra by the River by Jessica Anderson Spoiler:
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Dafoe Spoiler:
Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein Spoiler:

Both the theme and the selections promise an interesting August. I want to read every book. Actually, I read three long ago and would eagerly re-read any of them. I recall being amazed at how much I loved Stranger in a Strange Land when I had thought I disliked science fiction. Thanks, ccowie, for the thought and effort you put into this.

Interesting list ccowie, and a diverse group of books to choose from within the theme.
The poll is now up! |

What an interesting theme. Thanks ccowie for thinking of it - and for including an Aussie!

Should we make a list of previous volunteers and see who is left that we can strong arm into doing it?

I was thinking of much the same thing, perhaps going back say six months or so to over all who have participated (nominations, votes, or comments)? That and since there are not so many of us I'd be interested in how receptive people are to books that are not available as ebooks?

I much prefer an ebook if I don't already have it in another format. However, I have occasionally bought a print version.
