Desiderius Erasmus von Rotterdam oder nur Erasmus genannt
(am 28. Oktober 1466/1467/1469, in Rotterdam; † 11./12. Juli 1536 in Basel) war ein niederländischer Universalgelehrter und ist der bekannteste und einflussreichste Humanist der Neuzeit.
Erasmus war Theologe,
Philosoph, Philologe, Priester, Autor und Herausgeber von über 150 Büchern.
Als kritischer Denker seiner Zeit zählt Erasmus, der auch als „Fürst der Humanisten“ bezeichnet wird, zu den Wegbereitern der europäischen Aufklärung. Seine Wirkung reicht bis in die heutige Zeit.
