Companies hate me--I buy on sale and keep my gadgets until they die an e-death. My old boob tube style Sharpe that I bought off Craigslist for $50 still works so there's no chance of a newfangled flat screen TV making an appearance in my apartment any time soon.

In a way, the dedicated e-reader is like a can opener. If the can opener was just invented, there would be a lot of can openers sold as people adopted the technology. But once everyone had a can opener, a lot less can openers would be sold. Except for people getting their first can opener, most can openers would be sold to people whose can openers were broken or lost. As long as a can opener does it's job, people don't need another. It's the same with e-readers, as long as the device still works, people aren't all that highly motivated to upgrade.

So why iphones sell like hotcakes? If, like can openers, most people have one already, same or different brand. |

I think because e-readers are generally successful in replicating an existing technology (books), and there hasn't been much meaningful improvement in the book functionality that they're not able to copy. People are also generally satisfied with the battery life and lightness of e-readers. I don't think they're entirely like can openers though. Just that not everyone needs a can opener and they haven't really improved the latest ones.
Smartphones, on the other hand, are a new category, and if they're copying anything, it's computers (and the ARM chips are still way behind the x86 in power, so they're not really there yet). Plus, there's a lot of room to improve on, in size and battery life, screen, etc. And, the smartphone market is not saturated yet, while the e-reader market in the US may be. |

I don't know if "most" people have smartphones yet either. Certainly not to the same extent that people own can openers. |

A tablet IS an eReader - it just does other things too.
