I guess I should have added that most of the caring ones invested money in covers and editing before ever thinking about hitting the upload button. And I don't mean Fivver money.
The one thing they all have in common is they thought of books as a business.

Yes, they can all write, but the mind set wasn't "I am a great writer." It was I am going to invest time and money in writing and publishing a book and hope to get a return."
I could dang near write a book on what I learned from them about books.
Though seriously, those guys are the big reason I haven't bothered with my cookbook. Not to mention it would cost a fortune to get it cleaned up and reformatted.

Yes. It would be EXTREMELY expensive to do a cookbook. Unless it was just mimeographed and three-hole punched, the production expenses would quickly pile up.

Note: this was a non-illustrated cookbook. Oh and binding was cheaper than 3 hole punch.
If I remember right it cost about a dollar (note this was 20 years ago) for each paper copy.
I was actually referring to turning it into an ebook.
I finally scanned it into the computer. Cheapest estimate to clean and format was $300.
