Alighieri, Dante: Divine Comedy Vol 1 - The Inferno (Illustrated). v1. 30 Dec 2013

"The Inferno" is the first part of Dante Alighieri's 14th century epic poem, "The Divine Comedy" (the other two parts being "Purgatory" and "Paradise"). This is the 1814 blank verse translation by H. F. Cary, and has the complete set of 75 woodblock illustrations by Gustave Doré, which were originally published in 1866.

This ebook version has been optimized for large-screen devices and may or may not display correctly on devices with smaller screens (it will depend how well they deal with pictures large than the screen size). It is best viewed on a large-screen tablet such as an iPad, or Android equivalent.

"The Inferno" is an allegory telling of the journey of Dante through Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. In the poem, Hell is depicted as nine circles of suffering located within the Earth. Allegorically, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul towards God, with the Inferno describing the recognition and rejection of sin.

Enjoy!

I'd be interested to know how well 6" ePub readers handle this. Windows desktop Adobe Digital Editions makes no attempt to resize the illustrations - they are simply truncated.

Just curious: why didn't you use the images I processed? (http://djelibeibi.unex.es/libros/Dore/). I don't recall now if I used those or some downsized versions for the multilingual edition, but I think they are sharper and with better contrast. At least you could have asked me, if you didn't know of the web page

As for the image clipping, I didn't try in the reader, but given the code:

Code:
.calibre1 {
    display: block;
    text-align: center
    }
.calibre4 {
    height: auto;
    width: auto
    }

<div class="calibre1"><img border="0" src="images/00003.jpg" class="calibre4"/></div>
I'm not surprised they are not resized. Try adding:

Code:
max-width: 100%;
max-height: 100%
to the .calibre4 style.

Thanks for the advice - I've uploaded a new version with the style changes you suggested.

Not consistently! The AdobeReader on the iRiver resizes it correctly (=shows the whole image) as does CoolReader on the Onyx Boox i62. But the AdobeReader on the i62 just truncates the images (if this is the right word for only displaying the upper left part of the image).

Thanks, Billi, that's interesting. Anyone have any advice on what further changes could be made to the styles to improve ePub support? The Kindle version works absolutely fine - the picture is shrunk to fit the page if too large.
