Now, if someone could convince Sony to move to a $9.99 maximum for bestsellers, they'd be on a par with both Kindle and Fictionwise |

And the new trend at Sony......comes to a screeching halt or at least hits a major bump in the road. In the past four weeks Sony have added about 3,600 new titles and now have a bit over 107,000 ebooks for sale for the Readers. Last October, they had promised to reach the 100,000 mark by the end of 2008. Having met that goal (a few months late) with a strong push for a couple of months this year, they have apparently now reduced their efforts back closer to their previous rate which was under 100 new titles per day. It would be unfortunate if they continue at that old rate.

I just finished another comparison of Sony vs. Amazon for ebooks using dugbug's SF/Fantasy award winners spreadsheet. From the 437 titles in the spreadsheet, Amazon has 133 of them (30.4%) and Sony has 98 of them (22.4%). Amazon had 37 titles that Sony did not. Sony had 2 titles that Amazon did not. In the past four weeks Sony have added just 3,500 new titles and now have about 111,000 ebooks for sale for the Readers. It seems rather clear that they have reduced their efforts back to their previous rate of adding roughly 100 new titles per day. Yes, very disappointing.

Not Good! I just took a quick look at Sony's offerings and it appears that they have almost completely stopped adding new titles. I'll check again on Thursday or Friday after a full four weeks is up, but, at the moment, it looks like they've added only about 550 new titles since June 18. Definitely not good!

Sony Nearly Ceases! In the past four weeks, Sony have added a total of 600 new titles to their ebook store. That's an average of barely 20 per day. I can only fear what this means.

They probably haven't been putting as many backlist books up. They had a big push on it for a while (maybe they are focusing more on the new device release). I'm not too worried!

I know I'm not worried because I rarely buy any book from the Sony store. With all the other ebook retailers available and with B&N now entering the ebook marketplace, I think Sony is focusing less on ebook sales and more on ebook device sales. It's one of the nice things about being able to natively read ePub and PDF.

I agree--now that my 505 can read ePub files, I really see no reason to buy books from the Sony store.

In the past four weeks Sony have added 3,100 new titles and now have about 115,000 ebooks for sale for the Readers. The previous four weeks was hopefully just a result of a long nap.

I wonder if Sony is going to slow down a bit as they prepare transitioning to epubs and incorporating the wireless delivery of the daily unit.
