It is a sporting tale, yes. (though a tale perhaps best left until after the little girls and boys have, like Big Dog, gone to Ni-Night Land).

Every time I hear "chéri", I want to respond using "mon chien" or "mon chat". I don't know why. Perhaps it's because "dog" and "cat" are two of the only words I remember from high school French.

Does French have "cute" words for the beasties, like "pussycat" and "puppy"?

Cheers,
Marc

well naturally. you can say "minou" for cat, and in fact there is also "minet" for little (boy) cat and "minette" for little (girl) cat, which are also used as affectionate names for children / loved ones (well, "minette" more than minet, these days. they're a bit dated). and also if you're feeling excessively gooey you could say something such as "chatounet" or "chatounette".

as for dogs, my friend's 3 year-old son calls his stuffed animal dog "oua-oua". presumably that's the noise it would make, if it had any sort of vocal cords. old ladies with silly little dogs call them "chien-chien" sometimes. a friend of mine refers to them in verlan as "ienche" ("tache" for chat) but that probably is not as cute as what you had in mind.

That's sick. Oua-oua. I can't fathom what that must sound like (my spoken French is not quite as good as my written French). Probably sounds like someone in distress after a few too many. Whatever, it must be awful. And chien-chien. It's not a teensy-weensy plaything you bought at the Disney plaything store. It's a DOG!

oua-oua is pronounced as "wa-wa", because dogs in french say "waf waf !!" (well, "ouaf ouaf", but you don't know how to pronounce that. )

i'm glad to have been able to broaden your horizons. i do what i can to promote franco-american relations and general global harmony, in my own little way. i can't really help you with other translations, since i already don't speak dog fluently in french or english, so german or japanese is completely beyond my reach, but with a little luck some other forum members will be able to help.

i bet tirsales knows how to say a lot in german dogspeak. maybe he could teach us some good swear words (the most important words to learn in any foreign language, obviously).
