Rockin' & Rollin' in L.A.

Just had a 5.8 (so far) quake in L.A. about 20 mins ago. No damage and no injuries reported so far. It's been felt as far away as Las Vegas.

I've lived here a long time and been through my share of quakes but this is the first one I felt in my car. I started to feel it as I pulled up to a stop light. At first I thought something was wrong with a tire. After I stopped my car kept rocking and the light poles were really swaying so I thought it was a big wind... except there was no wind sound and the leaves on the trees weren't moving. Then I realized it was an earthquake.

Good thing I keep a quake kit in the trunk of my car.

One of those things I actually miss (a little). The earthquakes where no one is hurt, and everyone just gets a little adrenaline boost.

They really are fun (sick but true)... as long as no one gets hurt and there isn't too much damage. Phone lines are a bit jamed up with people trying to call each other about it but when I reached the person I was trying to call, the first thing I said was "Did you enjoy the ride?" and of course shared what we were doing when it hit.

It's been downgraded to a 5.4.

I know .... I lived in California for about 40 years, and people never understood how most of us feel about quakes. If they hit in the dead of night, you wake up, estimate the Richter scale, and if it's less than 6, you roll over and go back to sleep. If it hits during the day, you enjoy the ride ... and as long as it's a no injury quake, and there's not much damage ... it's no harm no foul.

We have so many of them ... and most cause few if any injuries or deaths. It's really very hard not to get a little blase about them. And, it's not like you can really do anything about them. There is no warning siren to take shelter ... you can't see it coming for days like a hurricane. You just hope that this one isn't the "big one" and that your number is not up ... and hold on.

But, that said .... I am glad that you and yours are all ok.

yeesh. i'm so glad earthquakes are not a problem in paris. the people who keep rebuilding san francisco every time it's razed (how many times has it been ? plus the fire, let's not forget that time as well...) just amaze me. i can't decide whether they're suicidal, homicidal, or just completely insane.

Well, building codes have changed a lot since the quake of 1906, and more damage was caused by the fire than the actual quake.

The damage in the last large SF quake was caused by liquifaction of the strata underneath a portion of the city. The problem there was that the structures had been built on landfill, and most were built prior to the current, more stringent, building codes.

Of course ... then there was the freeway collapse. I must admit, I do not feel particularly safe on double decker freeways or high overpasses in quake prone areas.

But then, you might as well ask why people move back into areas prone to hurricanes, tidal waves, blizzards, floods .... it's just the way people are.

Wisconsin is without meteorological or geological events that can kill you.

Well, except for the tornadoes.

And the straight line winds.

And the near 0 K winter temps.

And the drivers from Iowa during the blizzards.

Oh, don't forget the blizzards!

And the floods.

And the homicidal, maniac squirrels.

Other than that, the safest place in the world to live! It hasn't killed me, yet, as far as I know.

And, let us not forget that Wisconsin is within ashfall range of the Yellowstone Super Volcano, if that should ever choose to blow.
